Lean Thinking focuses on creating value, eliminating waste and improving the flow of work. Blockchain technology introduces new possibilities for transparency, traceability and trusted information exchange.
But what happens when these two concepts come together?
Together with John Dennis, I explored this question in our book, Blockchain for Lean Systems, looking at how blockchain concepts can be understood and considered within Lean environments.
The fundamentals of blockchain technology.
How distributed ledger technology works.
The relationship between blockchain and Lean principles.
Transparency and traceability in business processes.
Blockchain applications in supply chains.
Smart contracts and process automation.
Opportunities and limitations of blockchain in operational environments.
Lean principles are traditionally applied within an organisation, where processes, people and resources can be brought together to reduce waste, improve flow and create value. This is often referred to as intra-organisational Lean.
However, many business processes do not stop at the organisation's boundaries. They involve suppliers, partners, customers and other external stakeholders, making improvement across these relationships just as important. This is where inter-organisational Lean comes into play: extending Lean thinking beyond a single organisation to improve processes that involve multiple parties.
Blockchain can support this approach by providing a shared, traceable and reliable record of information and transactions between organisations. It can help address challenges related to transparency, trust, data consistency and coordination, making it easier for different parties to work together and improve the flow of value across organisational boundaries.
